All Things Printed

Dress:c/o HERE (Get 1 month for FREE)| Baubles: Betsey Johnson, TJMAXX| Bow mules: HERE

When it comes to summer attire floral prints feel like a no-brainer, but what about other prints? Take for instance, abstract prints. Are you a fan? Although I personally admire a number of prints from afar (I love to mix prints😊), I notice that only certain prints consistently find a home in my wardrobe. They are florals, stripes, and dots. Why is that?
Actually, I have no idea! LOL! I've mused over this again and again but I can't make heads or tails of it.
Herein lies another reason why I really appreciate the services that Gwynnie Bee offers: I CAN TRY ANYTHING- ANY STYLE, BRAND, CUT, SIZE, AND PRINT - WITHOUT COMMITMENT!
It's like a personal dressing room- with perks!
Take for instance the dress in today's post. I really like the color palette (pastels are all the rage), the print is cute, and the cut is one that I normally go for.
However, after spending a few days with it (I wore it twice), I realized that it isn't a item that I would like to purchase. Yes, I've enjoyed  our time together, but now it's time to say 'Farewell'. I'm sending it back in my next shipment and gearing up for something that I will like even better!
I mentioned previously that I am working with Gwynnie Bee this month to showcase a few stellar summer style options. I'm also sharing tidbits on how I decide which items to keep/purchase versus what I send back:

  • Today's dress is going back because something about it doesn't feel like "me"
  • Although it fits to a tee, I am not impressed with it, especially in comparison to my previous dress HERE

Have you tried Gwynnie Bee yet? Don't forget, you can try it out for FREE HERE!!!
As a recap: Gwynnie Bee is an online women’s clothing subscription service for sizes 10-32. You can rent a new wardrobe today with free shipping and + unlimited exchanges.

Girl Friday

Well Babes, we’ve made it! It is officially the end of the very first week in 2017 πŸ˜‰ I think that merits a celebration, don’t you agree?! LOL! Did you have a pretty good week?  I certainly hope so! I did, and it flew by...literally-like time seemed to disappear! I know this question has been asked for eons, but seriously I want an answer:
Where does the time go??? πŸ‘€

In other news: I’ve had so much fun getting glam with Eliza J. on the blog this week! This latest trilogy demonstrates just how versatile and multi-functional dressy separates can be. If you missed Take 1 & 2, please check them out here and here!

What I LOVE about separates is that you can mix and match items depending on your style mood and or needs- dress them up or dress them down- basically styling separates gives me full control!

Now don't get me wrong, I will be an enthusiastic fan of fabulous dresses for as long as I breathe - but- I also enjoy stepping out and showing out in/with separates 😍
Which look is your favorite? To be honest, I think Take 2 swept me away!!

Until next time,
X

Slay in Sequins

Stand-out sequins have dominated the runways this year, I love how they have trickled down into almost every style genre and fashion retailer! Yes, no matter which style you choose (there are so many to choose from), now it is easier than ever to brighten up your everyday wardrobe <3 Today’s look provides a perfect example of a quick way to breathe new life into a plain white t-shirt. Add faux fur + sequins of course!!! I can also see this sequins skirt styled with a denim shirt and or blazer, worn in a more conservative setting, say my office…LOL! Stay tuned my dear colleagues- this look is coming to the office really soon :) So Loves, are you styling sequins this season and if so, how?!

Until next time,
XO

A Side of Lemons Please

Sunnies: Betsey Johnson| Denim jacket: Michael Kors| Top: c/o Ruby Linker
Tulle skirt: Etsy vendor, old (worn here, here, and here)| Boots: Betsey Johnson, also worn here

Today’s style story features a funky tee from Ruby Linker, a California based brand that offers limited edition tees styled with varying shapes and proportions.

I was invited to participate in the Ruby Linker Style Challenge, and given the fact that I love a challenge- I selected this eclectic lemon print top. It actually fits like a tunic (see here), and is ideally styled with jeans- in my mind I picture skinnies or a cute boyfriend cut. However, I didn’t want to style it with jeans, because it felt…well… boring! LOL! So I opted to step outside of my styling norms and to have some fun with a look that is just as eclectic and funky as the tee itself : )

Interesting facts: Ruby Linker's unique digital designs are transferred to fabric. The company uses a state-of-the-art printing technique called dye-sublimation. This technique transfers thin sheets of color onto paper that is then heated, forcing the dye to vaporize and form a chemical bond with the cloth. The brand states that their garments are based on expressive art that could just as easily been displayed on a canvas or behind a glass frame, but instead have been created as clothing.

Until next time,
XO

Summer in Bloom

Has this ever happened to you? Picture this scenario: You spot a fabulous summer look online and fall in love with the print, the style, and the flow of it. You aren’t too sure though how exactly it will look on you. So you head over to the brick & mortar store to see if they have it in stock and to give it a try it on before you make the final commitment. However, after checking two stores, you learn that they do not have the item in stock in-store, and that you must order it online. Your heart sinks. You head back to the website and stare at the ensemble again. Love at first sight! Still, you aren't sure, you don't feel confident making a definitive decision!
Of course there is always the option of purchasing it and then sending it back if need be, but….So, two weeks go by. Try as you may, you cannot stop thinking about that outfit! Finally you take the plunge, place your online order, and bite your nails in constant anticipation of its arrival…
Triumphantly the moment comes, your package has arrived!!! You rip it open in a frenzied fashion and immediately try it on. You are filled with high hopes: The moment of truth is finally realized and you feel exhilarated! Such was my personal experience with today’s look =) I deliberated for what feels like forever before I finally took the leap and ordered it online!
I personally prefer brick and mortar stores 10 times out of 10, however things are shifting in the retail industry, now I find myself perusing online shops. I actually subscribe to the e-newsletter for this particular retailer, and I heart their designs. When this look popped into my inbox, I was caught by storm.
For one thing, I already have a number of off the shoulder options (see examples here, here, and here); I’ve even mentioned on Instagram that I may very well need an intervention! I can’t seem to say “no” when I come across new shoulder-less options….Which brings to mind, I recently read an interesting piece about dressing for summer, providing pointers if you don’t like your arms.
The writer advised that if you have some concern about showing your arms, you should get in on the off the shoulder trend: “Shoulder-baring tops are everywhere right now and for good reason. No, not just because they look super cute at brunch but because they’re also the perfect silhouette for hiding arm insecurities. The banded top exposes your strong shoulders and slim collarbone while covering the softer areas of your arms in one trendy fell swoop.” Source Pure Wow
That comment gave me cause for pause. I don’t love my arms, but I don’t hate them either. Admittedly, it is true that most off the shoulder tops provide coverage for a portion of your arms. But is that reason enough to wear them? Say, if you’re not particularly fond of the style itself? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this Babes, please do share below!

Until next time,
XO

Canadian Tuxedo

When it comes to styling jeans, one of my absolute most favorite ways to do so includes pairing them with a denim or chambray top (see examples here and here). This idea is all the rage right now and is commonly referred to as the Canadian Tuxedo.
You may currently be looking for ways to take the denim on denim approach into warmer weather, say Spring or even Summer. An easy way to lighten up the dark duo is by going for…you guessed it: Lighter shades! Yes pastel and even white denim can effortlessly convey a warmer weather effect. Although I bat for white denim wear all year round, I also cannot resist a good pastel effect (see examples here, here, and here).

While styling this look, I knew that I wanted a Spring-like vibe, as the weather was simply wonderful. I had plans for an intimate plus size blogger outing (with Ivory Jinelle & Dionna), and I knew that our day would consist of a bit of walking, eating, and of course some shopping.  I opted for an over-sized tunic that exudes comfort and ease of wear. The fabric is so soft and lightweight. The sleeves can be cropped or worn long. Buttoned up, or not. I love clothing pieces that offer options! In true monochrome enthusiast fashion I paired this tunic with light blue denim skinnies (also worn here). Oh, and did you peep my throwback handbag? I believe it’s circa 1990s! I absolutely love the color!
Ok, ok, I know you’re entranced by this bubble gum style statement necklace! LOL! Ok, perhaps not so much entranced, but it is fun right?! I felt like it added a touch of whimsical to the entire look, and that’s exactly what I wanted =) I had such a blast that day, and a special thank you to Dionna of Made Me Pretty for a wonderful time and her star role as photographer!!!!
Until next time babes! XO

Spring Forward

We have officially entered the countdown for Spring! ! ! Can you believe that it is less than six weeks away?! Most of the US is in a freeze zone, but in my neck of the woods we’re experiencing a glimpse of Summer 2016, complete with near record breaking temperatures. Highs peaked at 89 degrees the other day, simply unbelievable in the middle of February- but nonetheless wonderful!
I opened the windows in my office, cracked the sunroof while driving, and happily peeled off a suddenly unnecessary sweater :)
The vest that I’m wearing in today’s post boasts a gorgeous floral print, completely reminiscent of all the glory that is springtime. I mean, isn’t floral print synonymous with warmer temperatures?! I’m not saying that floral print can’t be worn effortlessly all year around, however there is something distinctive about florals that always make me think of Spring days back in the Midwest…  This vest is fabulously simple, I feel like it does all of the work. I’m so happy that I didn’t leave it in the store, as I most certainly debated about it over and over again… You see, I have a notorious habit of talking myself out of buying things, and then later on languishing over my poor decision, wishing that I would have bought the item. The advantage of making the purchase when in doubt is that the item can always be returned (at most retailers)! However, if you leave it in the store, you never know if it will be there when you go back, especially in your size O_O
Now that we’ve gone through confessions of #ShoppersAnonymous , I'll keep it moving...
This vest is easily dressed up or down, layered, and can simply be worn over the shoulders in cape-like fashion. The winning factors for me were the print, length, and functional pockets. Oftentimes pockets are not deep enough to be fully functional, so I always appreciate a pocket that can actually hold my keys, cell, and so on….
Now let's chat about this fitted beauty by swak designs- I fell hard for the side ruching detail right away. The body con design is fabulous on curves and with strategic ruching can camouflage a multitude of indiscretions, if you know what I mean ;) I've been experimenting with wearing more neutral colors and gray has become a fast favorite. It goes with everything, and easily subs for its close cousin, black.
Until next time lovies,
XO

Decidedly Different

pop•u•lar•i•ty - pΓ€pyΙ™ΛˆlerΙ™dΔ“/ -noun
The state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people.
From adolescence on, there seems to be a desire, perhaps even a need, to be liked and accepted by everyone. For some, the realization that they are not liked and or accepted leads to depression and desperation. In this age of social media fascination, receiving 'likes' from strangers or 'friends', adoring thumbs up, and or a certain amount of followers, has introduced a new intensity for the desire to obtain popularity. It seems to serve as an artificial or virtual ego booster, particularly for those who may not experience the same level of adoration as they may on social media, in their real, physical lives. Yes, in the world of social media, being liked equates to value, marketability, and oftentimes revenue.
Although I have experienced varying phases of physical popularity, completely unsolicited by the way (read more here), I personally believe that there is immense value in this: Realize and accept the fact that not everyone will like the same people or the same things. Everyone will not like ME. Simple, cut, dry. It is not bad thing, it simply is
I personally feel a sense of satisfaction in knowing that there are things about me and the way that I think that are vastly different from the people around me. My grandma once told me, ‘You’re an old soul’. She meant that my manner of thinking was beyond my age. I believe that she was right. To be honest, it really makes very little difference to me whether people like me or not. I don’t have a desire to be popular, I desire to be MYSELF. I refuse to allow the vacillating sweep of social media, the virtual world, to influence my value of self.(Read the reason why I started blogging here)
I will not follow the crowd. I will not join superficial bandwagons. I will not give insincere praise. I will not do things that I do not want to do - to gain acceptance, marketability, or branding.
I am, decidedly different.

Turquoise Dewdrop

Happy Fri-yay Loves!!!
Today's post is short & sweet because it's Friday and who has time to read a long blog post?! LOL!
Let the weekend games commence!
Turquoise drenched silk is easily paired with an abstract skirt and a trim of suede.
During the Spring season, the weather can be somewhat unpredictable.
Long sleeves and suede shoes are appropriate for daytime breezes and nighttime chills.
I've mentioned before that silk permeates my wardrobe. I love the fiber because it's not as breathable as others, which in my opinion gives it a warming factor. I  S T A Y cold! Silk helps me to stay warm when I don't want to wear layers.

What are your tricks for staying warm without adding layers?

Until next time, have a GREAT weekend!

Inspired by IRIS

Iris who? I R I S Apfel

My girl Sheena over at IAmSheGlobal invited me to a private screening of the Iris Apfel documentary a couple of weeks ago. You've no doubt seen Iris on the net, in magazines, and probably on my favorite inspiration market, Pinterest.

This documentary gives private glimpses inside the thought processes of the rare bird. Although Iris refers to herself as not pretty, I think her beauty radiates from the inside outward. She's smart, witty, and stylish- who could ask for more?! Age and beauty do not always come hand in hand, but Iris definitely has both.

I stared in awe as I tried to take in her fantastic vintage collections and immense storage areas. Each piece has become a memory in her book of travels and life experiences.

At one point the film shows her and her husband Max (who is 100 yrs old BTW) shopping for new vintage threads, I instantly felt the need to jump through the screen and snag a pinstripe Oscar de la Renta navy and white coat. My goodness!!! What a wealth of rare treasures she has!

Of Iris' philosophies 'more is more', and 'pattern mixing is always the way to go' - these two resonate with me the most. In Iris-like fashion, for today's look I piled on the necklaces, mixed up prints in this custom made number, and topped it all off with vintage goodness.

Over to you, please do share: who are your inspiration muses?

Until next time,
XO
